Kara Birth Story

I had planned to have a home birth from before I was pregnant, it seemed the most natural thing to do and I really don’t like hospitals. Although James agreed he had some concerns, I was so determined that we decided on an independent midwife. As I believed her to be my closest chance of a home birth.

We first met with Virginia when I was 5 months pregnant it was the same day as my 20 week scan in which all was well. I was already sure but James needed some reassurance and information which Virginia gave easily, as soon as she left it was agreed. She really put our minds at rest about everything. We really looked forward to every appointment and appreciated that all her information was based on facts so we could always make informed decisions.

4 am on my due date I started feeling mild contractions they were about 7 minutes apart and continued to get stronger through the day. We stayed in contact with Virginia and she came round at 3 pm she did her checks and all was going well she helped me straight away by suggesting breathing exercises, which worked. Virginia did an examination at 8.30 and as she did the last little bit of cervix went back so I was fully dilated I sat on the birthing chair and felt the urge to push. I remember being scared to push in case it hurt and I was very vocal about it but Virginia assured me not to fight the urge but to push with it and 25 minutes later my baby was born.

James kept the labour party amused

Virginia gave her to me straight away she was breathing and alert and perfect. I was able to see what sex we had she was a beautiful girl and I put her to the breast straight away. Once the cord had finished pulsing James cut it and held his daughter while I had a bath. I returned to a very tidy lounge and cuddled up on the sofa to breast feed my new baby while my mum, sister, dad, Virginia and James sat around and had fish and chips almost as if nothing had happened it was such a perfect evening.

I did have problems breastfeeding but Virginia kept helping me and reassuring me that it was not a big problem and I could over come it, I went on to feed her for 7 months and loved every minute and I believe its been down to good education and support from my wonderful midwife who I look forward to seeing again for next time.

You are the most professional and knowledgeable healthcare provider I have ever come across. your strong commitment to empowering women and giving them genuine choices during pregnancy & birth (which can be sadly lacking in today's NHS) is a refreshing change.

I always felt in control and I feel that I owe this to my midwife who instilled this confidence in me and who also had confidence in herself and that of natural childbirth
