Independent
midwives are autonomous practitioners. Like any other midwife
they are fully registered and accountable for their actions
or omissions. However they have chosen to work outside the
NHS.
Independent
midwives have many reasons for choosing to be self -employed.
Most feel that this is the only way to truly provide woman-centred
care.
Why
choose an independent midwife?
As
independent midwives we can offer you one to one care. Antenatal
visits will be in the comfort of your own home, they are
unhurried and as much emphasis is put upon developing a
relationship over a cup of tea as is put upon doing blood
pressure and testing urine. We can spend time researching
the questions you ask in order for you to be sure that the
decisions you make are the right ones for you and your baby.

When the time comes to have your baby in the place of your
choice you can be sure we will not be leaving you half way
through. After you have had your baby the support continues
for four weeks with as many visits as required. Again the
visits will be unhurried as this is often the time when
support is crucial to the on going relationship between
you, your baby and the rest of your family.
This
is an event that you will remember very clearly all of your
life...ask your mother! Make sure it is special by knowing
every choice that is available to you from beginning to
new beginning. One of those choices is booking an independent
midwife.
If
booking an independent midwife is an option you are considering,
first you must find one in your area. The 'Independent Midwives
Association' can help - you will find them on www.independentmidwives.org.uk
